Blood Bikes is the largest volunteer only charity in the UK completely funded by donations. We have saved the NHS hundreds of thousands of pounds by transporting blood samples to pathology departments all over the country. In addition we also transport breast milk which is needed for premature births and babies born from mothers who are cancer suffers. In addition to motorcyclists our charity also requires volunteers to help with the administering of telephone calls from their own homes as well as fund raisers.
One of the most fulfilling feelings for me is that I have managed to introduce several people to become members of Blood Bikes and they in turn have introduced more new members.
As well as arranging the regular transportations of blood samples within our respective areas we are often called upon to be part of a relay. There can be a sample which needs specific tests from one end of the country to another, for example from Glasgow to Cardiff. That one transportation may require six or seven different areas to organise the handing over from one rider to the next as it makes its journey south. Again everyone involved is a volunteer, the riders and the coordinators each playing their part in our team efforts.
